Cleveland, OH –Saturday, December 21st , 2019 is the first day of winter and the longest night of the year. On this day, community activists, homeless service providers, and unhoused men and women will gather to remember those who died in the homeless community in 2019.

“Winter is a dangerous and difficult time for people who are unhoused in our community.” says Chris Knestrick, Executive Director of the Northeast Ohio Coalition for the Homeless. “There are around 150 people sleeping outside every night. Every single shelter is full to capacity and family homelessness has increased 35% over the last two years. We need to focus on keeping people sheltered and alive this winter season.”

In 2009, Ohio legislators designated December 21st as Ohio Homeless Memorial Day. For 33 years, The Northeast Ohio Coalition For The Homeless has led the gathering of the Cleveland community to remember those who have spent time homeless and have passed away in the last year.

The Candlelight Memorial will take place on Friday, December 20, 2019 at the West Side Catholic Center at 3135 Lorain Ave. at 2 p.m. We will remember our family and friends with candles, prayers, and the reading of their names. State Senator Nickie J. Antonio will be offering short remarks to honor those who have passed.

NEOCH encourages all to attend this important event for our community.
