The Northeast Ohio Coalition for the Homeless (NEOCH) is seeking individuals to serve as AmeriCorps*VISTA members to serve one year creating programs and solving problems associated with homelessness. VISTA, which is often referred to as America’s domestic Peace Corps, is a program tailored to recent college graduates who spend one year of service working in community-based organizations to address the needs of impoverished citizens. Older Americans and those looking to change careers are also welcome to attend.
Positions are open to U.S. citizens, nationals, or lawful permanent residents with some college experience. Members serve full time for one year. Members will work in teams and individually to achieve goals and objectives. Members do not do direct service with homeless people, but work on creating new projects or sustaining existing projects.
Qualified candidates must have some higher education. Some experience with homelessness and poverty and/or working with local social service organizations, and good communication skills. Some experience planning projects, directing volunteers, collaborating with other community groups, working independently, conducting research, and preparing reports would be helpful. Most importantly, a desire to work with fragile populations is critical.
Commitment:
Project term is one full year. You must commit to full-time work with VISTA and may not work any other job during the year.
Compensation:
¨ AC*VISTA members are given a small living allowance every other week that equals just under $11,000 per year. The allowance does not impact most government assistance.
¨ Members will receive health benefits and may qualify for childcare assistance.
¨ Members will receive professional training.
¨ Members will receive a monthly travel allowance.
¨ Members will receive time off for holidays and vacations.
¨ AC*VISTA members are eligible to receive an education award in form of a voucher. The education award can be used to pay education costs at qualified institutions of higher education or training, or to repay qualified student loans. The award currently is $4,725, a member has up to seven years after his or her term of service has ended to claim the award.
