October 27, 2008 We have three special updates, including events, to report.
1. Freeze the Foreclosure Rally: The rally is Thursday October 30 at 4 p.m. at the Justice Center in Downtown Cleveland at W. Lakeside Ave & Ontario. NEOCH joins other community groups to support the effort to convince the local judges to stop issuing foreclosures until we can stabilize the mortgage workout programs, and the federal government decides on a strategy. Other communities have frozen all foreclosures, but we need some courageous judges to step forward. We need your help to show up and demonstrate community support for this rally.
2. Voting ID Lawsuit Settled. The Northeast Ohio Coalition for the Homeless settled our lawsuit against the State of Ohio and the Secretary of State over homeless voting without an ID. We decided that there was not enough time to get a free ID system in place before the election. In exchange, we got the court to order a directive in which there is a standardized procedure for counting provisional ballots. There are details on our blog at http://clevelandhomeless.blogspot.com. We feel that this is a victory for homeless people, and we reserve the right to get the court back involved in the future.
3. We still could use Volunteers for Election Day. If you would like to help drive homeless people to the polls on election day, we will send a few volunteers out to help. We did a massive effort to get homeless people to the polls early (300 people during the first week), but there are a large number of people attached to voting on election day. We will be directing volunteers to the various shelters for those who need a ride to their precinct. If you could volunteer on election day give us a call at 216/432-0540. We only need two or three people who have a car or van and would like to help. Thanks.
