New Commissioner for Cuyahoga County Sworn In
On Friday Jan. 3, 1997 at 12:00 noon a new commissioner of Cuyahoga County was sworn in at Ohio Theatre on Playhouse Square in Cleveland, Ohio. Prior to the swearing-in ceremony, an interfaith service took place at Trinity Cathedral across from Cleveland State University campus. Trinity Cathedral was still decorated for Christmas-wreaths, a Christmas tree, red ribbons, and candles. When the new county commissioner’s mother, the Rev. Dr. Joan Brown Campbell, general secretary of National Council of Churches of Christ in U.S.A., spoke she asked the congregation to meditate on the theme that “We are defined by religious voices who should heard.” Then the wonderful organ of Trinity Cathedral joined the assembled voices in the singing of hymns.
At the swearing-in ceremony, commissioner Jane Campbell said, “We won. Now it’s not get the job, it’s do the job!” A letter from Sen. John Glenn was read; he said,” Children, families, the disabled are my commitment.” A proclamation by Louis Stokes was also read by his daughter, Angela Stokes; he said, “she is committed to eradicate poverty, homelessness, and environmental decay.” Many suburban mayors & councilmen were in attendance as well as other local politicians. The prayers of the street people of Cleveland are with her.
