Accomplishments
In
its first ten years, the Coalition :
Successfully
advocated the creation of 400 transitional housing beds for families with
children, over 100 permanent housing units, and associated support services.
Promoted
the creation of the City of Cleveland-Cuyahoga County Office of Homeless
Services which has brought an additional $10 million in program support to
the Cleveland Homeless Community each year.
Published
a street newspaper (The Homeless
Grapevine) for over ten years containing stories by homeless people,
which has made over 285,000 papers available to residents and homeless
advocates in the Greater Cleveland area.
Assisted
advocates in Cincinnati to start a street newspaper that has assisted over
100 individuals find stable employment.
Printed
and distributed 50,000 Street Cards providing emergency information and
telephone numbers to homeless people, area libraries, and police stations
throughout Cuyahoga County.
Created
an annual social service fair (Stand Down) for homeless people that has
allowed over 4,000 people who sleep on the streets to gain access to local
services, clean up, and enjoy a day together and off the streets.
Sponsored
annual conferences to train social workers and staff about new ideas and
programs, which can help alleviate homelessness.
Made
over 300 public education presentations to area schools, civic
organizations, and religious congregations allowing homeless and formerly
homeless people to share their stories.
Developing
a Voice Mail network that allows 600 homeless people at 20 different
agencies to temporary voice mail to communicate with landlords and
employers.
Developing
a program to place 500 homeless individuals in permanent housing.
