Ione Biggs Award

The Northeast Ohio Coalition
for the Homeless would like to recognize the amazing work of Ione Biggs and
keep her legacy alive in Greater Cleveland.
We have partnered with representatives from Women Speak Out for Peace
and Justice, the Empowerment Center of Greater Cleveland, the Cleveland Tenants
Organization, Women’s Re-Entry Network, and the Church of the Covenant to
select a representative to receive the Ione Biggs Award for outstanding
contribution to advancing social justice in 2007 and to encourage others to
follow in her footsteps. We intend to
announce the winner of the award at the NEOCH Annual event “Help us End
Homelessness” on May 2, 2008. This application is due to NEOCH by March 17,
2008.
Criteria for Award:
o
Outstanding
contribution to advance the cause of peace or
o
Outstanding
leadership in forwarding social justice including issues in the area of human
rights, women’s rights, societal change leading to a reduction in the number of
people forced to live in poverty, or expanding the ability for disadvantaged
populations to access government services or their elected representatives.
o
We are seeking
individuals who have demonstrated success in the area of social justice. A common definition of social justice is
working for positive structural change and increasing the opportunity of those
who are less well off politically, economically, and socially. Change can be done through direct action,
political organizing, grassroots organizing, legal measures or communicating
the issues of disadvantaged populations.
o
These are the
values that Ione Biggs lived everyday, and we are looking to recognize those
working for social change and encourage others to follow in her path.
