NEOCH Programs have had an excellent year

2004 Highlights

Advocacy

q     Successfully led a national effort to convince major retailers to stop selling hate videos that showed homeless people attacked, humiliated or exploited.

q     Assisted over 300 individuals with transportation to the polling sites and NEOCH registered nearly 500 people.

q     Helped organize a Town Hall Forum for 500 people featuring speakers on poverty and homelessness.

q     Successfully lobbied the County to open an overflow shelter for men so that people were not sleeping on the streets.

q     County committed to assure voter registration as part of entry to every publicly - funded shelter.

 

 

Cleveland Homeless Legal Assistance – provides a link to legal assistance

q     CHLAP has increased the number of intakes by 50%. Serving over 400 clients. 

q     CHLAP has increased the number of lawyers, law students and paralegals volunteering with the program. They have more than doubled the number from the past years. 

 

Cleveland Community Voice Mail - provides a link to reliable and private communication     

q     CCVM has served over 5,200 people in Cuyahoga and Lorain Counties.

q     CCVM has partnerships with over 60 local agencies.

 

Bridging the Gap - provides a link to affordable housing and local resources

q     BTG has housed 40 people and provided furniture for 25 of them.

q     BTG has served over 200 people with life skill classes and have taken over 200 housing applications. 

 

AmeriCorps*VISTA – provides a link to the community on homeless and poverty issues while developing and implementing programs locally

q     Street Voices, NEOCH’s speaker bureau program has made over 30 presentations.

q     Organized community partners and developed a program to provide identification to homeless people.

 

Grapevine - provides a source of income to homeless and low income people while informing the community on poverty issues

q     Published 6 issues including one featuring exclusively the poetry of poet and friend Daniel Thompson

q     Hired staff to work on stabilizing the program.

q     Raised awareness and support from the community to be able to continue the program.
